tech news 2/8: ‘day late, two interceptions short’ edition
first off, welcome new subscribers! i hope you find the information here on our blog helpful and fulfilling. be sure to leave your comments and thoughts. props to jc for his feedback!
second off, congratulations to tony dungy, the first black coach to win the superbowl. while i’m obviously reeling from the loss of my beloved chicago bears, dungy deserves it. i also tip my hat off to crystal puff who called it.
on to the news!
i’ve noticed in our google analytics that ‘peekvid’ is one of our big search engine hits when people find the blog. if you didn’t know, peekvid.com allows you to watch your favorite tv shows, movies, cartoons, anime, and anything else you could imagine online for free. thanks to everyone who volunteered other sites to check out. to get even more ‘free tv goodness’, time.com listed ovguide.com as one of its top 10 websites. it basically is an aggregate of peekvid.com ‘like’ sites. so if you can’t find it on peekvid, check ovguide.com.
chicago-based 37signals.com has successfully integrated their basecamp and campfire project collaboration tools to over 1 million people and businesses. designed to eliminate the unnecessary clutter of visio diagrams, excel spreadsheets, and confusing jargon, the project collaboration tools are built on 37signals own ruby on rails framework. while that might be a little over your heads, i suggest trying it out and seeing if you can get some use out of campfire’s real-time chat capabilities, especially if you’re building the next facebook with your friends in different timezones.
awhile back, we had a post on ‘the side hustle‘ and made some recommendations on how to maximize your time. artypapers.com’s r. marie cox has a cool application called side job track that allows you to create invoices, time management reports, and audits of the time you spend in your hustle. i’ve played around with it a little, and its definitely something i’ll be using for my web programming ventures.
the money section of cnn.com had an article on a sherelle derico, a 36 year-old single mom millionaire in the making. sherelle not only has paid off almost $20,000 in student loans, but also paid her master’s degree almost entirely in cash! read her story and see if you have it what it takes to be a millionaire (spam and ramen noodles anyone?)
