the next new thing: ssd

if you’ve attempted to ride the technology train at any point of time, you know that most of the ’stops’ are marked by acroynms : dap, psp, hdtv, os, gps, GB, usb, etc. keeping in accordance, there is another acronym that will become mainstream very soon that all ybp’s should know about.

ssd.Young Black Professional Guide SSD

solid state disks (ssd) are inline to take over the storage market as the default option for all electronic gear that aims to store any precious media (pictures, video, music) you desire. while we have become accustomed to spinning hard drives as the crux of our large storage needs, the flash drives we use in usb memory sticks are becoming large scale to compete. why is this important?

it is important because the essential tool of the young black professional is knowing trends and what is on the horizon. while having the ‘latest’ technology may not be your ultimate goal (unless of course it is corporately funded), your next laptop, cell phone, or dap purchase will be applicable. you need to know that ssd will improve your tech experience and eventually save you money.

ssd offers many advantages over the current spinning, magnetic hard drive. according to daily tech,

Solid state drives enjoy several advantages over traditional hard disk drives, such as faster start up, faster read times, lower seek times, less power consumption, silent operation and lower weight. Solid state drives should also be more reliable as there are no moving parts involved in the device’s operation.

this means your laptop boots faster, uses less power, and responds a lot more quickly. this also means that there is less of a chance of incapacitating your device from shock (dropping it) since the main memory device does not have any moving parts.

as ssd becomes mainstream, the most important aspect of any technology purchase is cost. ssd will obviously obey the laws of economics as supply increases with demand and thus lowering the cost. while smaller sizes, like 8GB, are currently being offered in the upcoming apple iphone, the market will see sizes of 64GB and 128GB at reasonable prices within the coming year.
